Angry Parents

Emotions are stirred, hearts race, and words flow as parents watch and listen to the games their children play. While on the court or the field, our children belong to the coaches whose character comes out in the heat of the game. Our opinions do not matter and we’re forced to talk amongst ourselves in the stands, the bleachers and sidelines. If we can’t find anyone to vent to, we’ll simply yell out into the air hoping the coach or the sports gods will listen. “Put my child in the game!” “You can’t coach!” “Pass the ball!” What the heck are you doing?” “Are you a dumbass?”  If you're honest, you'll admit to either saying these things or thinking them.

I've heard that coaches don't like hearing comments yelled from the stands and will punish the player of the yelling parent. My opinion? Maybe the coaches should listen to the screams from the stands since they obviously have a better view from the stands. We obviously see something coaches don't.

If ego or pride keeps a coach from being open minded and receiving instruction, it's time to develop a tougher layer of skin and learn to accept out of control criticism thrown from the sidelines or stands.

Kudos to coaches for dealing with out of control, angry parents. It takes a good coach to listen to unreasonable, angry parents who are usually only concerned with one thing...the welfare of their child.
